Third graders attend Peter and the Wolf performance

Every Springfield Public Schools third grader attended a special performance of Drury University's annual production of "Peter and the Wolf" Tuesday, March 31 at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
For more than 45 years, Springfield third graders have attended a special performance of "Peter and the Wolf" at Drury University. The 1936 work by Sergei Prokofiev is designed to teach children about the orchestra through an easy-to-understand fairy tale about a boy and his animal friends being stalked by a wolf. Each character is represented by a different instrument and musical motif, helping build connections between the animated, colorful performers and their musical accompaniments.
“It was an engaging and memorable experience that brought music and storytelling to life,” said JoAnn Hite, principal of Westport K-8 School. “We’re so proud of how our students represented our school and embraced the arts!”
Prior to the performance, third grade teachers were provided curriculum to help "Peter and the Wolf" come alive for their students. The composer's biography, audio examples, illustrations of instruments and more helped students make connections to the power of music and performance, as well as encouraging them to be engaged, thoughtful audience members.
Performances of "Peter and the Wolf" are one of the many arts programs in Springfield associated with Any Given Child Initiative, ensuring that all children in the Springfield community are guaranteed a rich and full arts education.
