I Choose SPS: Meet Pickles, the Puffin

A sculpture of a papier mache puffin on a display stand in an art gallery.

“I was created through the hard work and dedication of the students at Field Elementary School and their teacher Heidi Stagner. I am made from papier mache — an artistic technique using paper, water and glue — and then painted to become my beautiful self. The entire school worked on me, from the littlest kindergarteners to the biggest fifth graders! Then the fifth graders got to vote on my name, March Madness bracket style.

Once I was fully formed, painted and dry, I moved to my new home at the All-School Art Exhibition at Missouri State University's Brick City Gallery. It’s been amazing seeing all the students, parents and friends come to visit me and the rest of the beautiful artwork around me. I even got to meet the SPS Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan.

Art is a powerful thing and I’m just so happy to be a part of it. The students who made me used so many different skills to create me including problem-solving, critical thinking, innovation and collaboration. Not to mention a whole bunch of imagination and creativity. I hope everyone can come see me during the month of March as we celebrate Youth Art Month together.“
