I Choose SPS: Meet Amber Bowler, Teacher at Field Elementary

A woman smiles, standing in front of a hydroponic planter.

“I believe I always wanted to become a teacher. I've always been surrounded by learning and growth between my family, my garden and wonderful mentors. I love nurturing things, whether it's people or plants. As my own children started school, I was reminded of all the things I loved about my own schooldays, and was inspired to go back to school myself.

Being at Field Elementary has always felt like I have been able to forge my own path as an educator by staying curious and reflective about what truly works for my students. Having a school garden, class pets and learning experiences — we are encouraged to explore a variety of instructional approaches. I enjoy crafting my own style and trying new things to support my students. I know that SPS values personalized learning, and we all know we learn best when we have agency and ownership in our learning environments.

Working with third-graders provides me a meaningful opportunity to nurture their natural curiosities and allows me to explore learning too! I love our community at Field. We have a unique environment with the International Baccalaureate's PYP that supports the whole child. It aligns with my own philosophy because it focuses on developing children through inquiry, reflection and real-world connections. I love to see how excited students get when I bring in things I find in my garden and getting kids to explore their natural world.”
